Tea tree oil is an essential oil obtained from Melaleuca tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) and it is also known as melaleuca oil. It is pale yellow to clear in color with camphor like smell. Native to New South Wales, Australia, tea tree oil is different from tea oil, which is extracted from green tea plant. This remarkable essential oil has over 98 components, among which terpinen-4-ol is responsible for its anti microbial properties. It is characterized by anti bacterial, anti viral, anti fungal, anti septic, anti inflammatory and cosmetic properties. proven to fight many common diseases when nothing else works, it has proven its worth in traditional medicine, for centuries. It is also an immunomodulant.
Tea tree oil is not supposed to be taken orally and is purely reserved for external application after suitable dilution.
Tea tree oil is effective against fungal nail infection (onychomycosis). It is also lethal for scabies, head lice and body lice, being more active than allopathic medicine Permethrin in these conditions. It is regarded as very useful for preventing diaper rash in babies. For this purpose, tea tree oil is added in small quantities to the water used for rinsing used diapers before drying and storing. It can also be added to the regular diaper rash preventive cream to get added benefit.
Mixing equal quantities of tea tree oil and lavender oil and applying over acne before sleeping cures acne when used regularly.
This essential oil is effective against a wide range of bacteria including various species of staphylococcus (chiefly responsible for skin infections and life threatening hospital-acquired infections, including the ones caused by infected indwelling catheters), streptococcus (skin and throat, chest infections), Corynebacterium acnes (responsible for acne), Pseudomonas (a deadly bacterium responsible for most of the hospital acquired infections), Escherichia coli (causing urinary tract infections), Klebsiella species (respiratory and urinary tract infections) and various other less significant bacteria. Combining silver ions with tea tree oil gives even better benefits against the above bacteria, especially pseudomonas and staphylococci.
In fact, towel bathing or regular bathing patients with 5% solution of tea tree oil in water prevents skin colonization with MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Staph. Aureus – a resistant bacteria present in most ICUs, causing resistant skin and systemic infection in severely ill patients).
The efficacy of tea tree oil against seborrheic dermatitis, causing dandruff is proven by modern clinical trials. When tested against a placebo, a 5% shampoo of this essential oil gave 41% improvement in symptoms as against only 11% with placebo. It is effective against the yeast Candida species that are resistant to the antifungal drug Fluconazole, scoring one over conventional medicine.
When 5% solution of tea tree oil was compared against 5% benzoyl peroxide (usual acne treating cream) for mild to moderate acne, the side effect profile was much less with tea tree oil (44% versus 79%) while providing similar clinical improvement outcomes.
Eumycetoma foot is a particularly disabling infection of the foot caused by the fungus Madurella mycetomatis which has to be treated by early surgery followed by high doses of antifungal agents ketoconazole or itraconazole. Both have significant liver toxicity and patients have been lost due to this. Tea tree oil is shown to inhibit Madurella myetomatis, presenting an interesting alternative treatment option for this condition.
Human Papilloma Virus causes warts, commonly on fingers and palms. Treatment option is limited in modern medicine. Application of tea tree oil once daily for two weeks leads to complete clearance and re-epithelialization of the involved areas. It also fights viral herpes skin conditions like shingles and chickenpox.
Demodecosis of the eyes is a disease caused by the microscopic insect Demodex folliculorum. It causes eyelid itching, irritation and scaling leading to eyelid thickening, loss of eyelashes, eye inflammation and decreased vision. Application of tea tree oil extract as a scrub over the affected eyelids cures the condition. Diluted preparations are used to treat bacterial and fungal infections in aquarium fish.
